Synopsis

Is there an image powerful enough to overthrow a political regime? Consumed by this question, Johny, the guardian of Havana’s judicial archives, must decide which pages of Cuba’s history to erase in order to save the Revolution.

Directors’ Note

In 2020, we were granted access to the judicial archives of the Cuban revolutionary government, which had been closed to the public for over 60 years. Our goal was to document and preserve the vast photographic collection contained within the criminal files. This journey gradually turned into a film after the serendipitous discovery that Johny, the archive’s guardian, had a unique ability to converse with the photographs he safeguarded. Through his gaze, we explore the tension between truth and propaganda, past and present, in a narrative that invites the viewer to question the authenticity of images and historical narratives. Our motivation is to unearth these hidden stories and use these photographs from the past as a portal to engage with issues that resonate deeply in the present.
